Why is climate change of concern of society?

Scenes of flooding, drought and storms in Europe have recently shown us how much climate change and extreme weather conditions can affect our lives. Understanding and predicting what the next season might bring, or predicting how climate will change over the next century is of vital importance - both for our economy and for society. Some facts about climate change:
  • Our planet is exposed to global warming because of increased greenhouse gas concentration
  • Global warming causes more frequent and powerful cyclones and hurricanes, intense floods and droughts
  • Snow cover is declining in the mid- and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere
  • Almost all mountain glaciers in non-polar regions retreated during the 20th century
  • The sea level is increasing, which is a direct threat to many big cities in the delta areas
