CMIP 5 - Coupled Model Intercomparison Project - Phase 5

Using a GCM to carry out simulations of the global climate during the period 1860-2100 (240 years) is a major computational effort even with present-days supercomputers. To benefit most from these experiments they are coodinated across different modelling institutes. This is done through a collective effort in the scientific climate modelling community known as the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). There has been several cycles of these collaborations, and each cycle has provided significant input to the IPCC assessments.

While the CMIP community is fully independent to the IPCC assesment exercises, it provides essential input in the form of coordinated set of global global climate scenarios. For example, IPCC AR4 drew heavily on the climate scenarios produced by CMIP3, and CMIP5 will be the main source of global climate scenario data for the upcoming IPCC AR5.
